Bridge & Tunnel
Bridge & Tunnel was a groundbreaking one-woman show that captivated Broadway audiences with its vibrant, deeply human portrayal of New York’s immigrant voices. Written and performed by the extraordinary Sarah Jones and produced through The Culture Project, the play stands as a powerful testament to theater’s ability to foster empathy and understanding across cultural lines.
Directed by Tony Taccone and supported by Meryl Streep as a producer, Bridge & Tunnel showcased Jones’s remarkable gift for embodying more than a dozen distinct characters. Jones portrayed a wide range of characters, from a Pakistani accountant to a Chinese matriarch, a Mexican laborer, a Bronx schoolgirl, and a Haitian nurse, all gathered for an open-mic poetry night in South Queens.
With just subtle shifts in voice, posture, and minimal props, Jones brought each character to life, creating not only a celebration of difference but a poignant exploration of the shared human longing for dignity, security, and belonging. Her unparalleled stagecraft turned the solo format into a powerful expression of connection and coexistence.
Winner of a Special Tony Award in 2006, Bridge & Tunnel remains a milestone in solo performance—embodying the melting pot spirit of America with heart, humor, and humanity.
“In focusing on the immigrant experience, Ms. Jones is honoring anew—and embodying in theatrical form—the durable dream that keeps drawing immigrants to America.”
